Chapter Seventeen

The sound of approaching hooves snapped Isa out of his daydream. He ran to the lookout in their compound. The green and brown blur in the shimmering heat haze advanced on the horizon. By the time the royal messenger had reached the compound, Master was already aware of their visitor and waited with Isa to receive him by the open gate.

“Durbar master, the durbar council requests your presence at once,” said the emissary. His horse panted with exhaustion but the messenger didn’t dismount. “It is a matter of urgency.”

“On whose authority?” asked Master casually.

“Durbar Master Asari.”

“Understood,” said Master. “The boy and I will come at once. You can res—”

“Thank you durbar master but I have strict orders to return to the palace immediately, once your departure has been confirmed.”

There was a brief but awkward silence. Master gave Isa a curious almost bemused look before responding to the messenger. “Our departure will be confirmed once my ward gets our horse. His feet appear to have become rooted to the ground.”

The messenger stared at Isa. Master flashed Isa an irritated look. Isa looked at Master confused. “My ward has plenty of imagination but not much initiative. Isa!”

Isa snapped out of his daze. “Yes Master.”

“Don’t just stand there. You heard the man. Get Sisoko. We leave for the palace now.”
